Bon Iver
The folk band Bon Iver is fronted by Justin Vernon. Vernon founded the band in 2007 and is the lead singer, songwriter, and founder of the band. While touring as Bon Iver, Michael Noyce (Vocals, Guitar), Sean Carey (Drums, Vocals, Piano), and Matthew McCaughan (Bass, Drums, Vocals) also tour with lead front man Vernon. Noyce was a guitar student under Vernon when in high school. Vernon remains the creative force and genius behind the band with the band more of a supporting act behind him at live shows.
The band’s name comes from a variation of the French phrase “Bon Hiver”, which means “Have a Good Winter”. While away at a cabin in the woods of Wisconsin Vernon attempted to gather his thoughts after an ended relationship and band breakup. Vernon watched episodes of Norther Exposure on DVD and saw an episode of people in the cold winters of Alaska would say “Bon Hiver”. When Vernon learned the correct spelling was hiver he decided it looked too much like liver and reminded him of his recent spell with mononucleosis. Vernon would attempt to spell it on paper and spelled it wrong and the name stuck.
The band’s debut album For Emma Forever Ago was mostly written and recorded while Vernon was away in Wisconsin. Vernon would play all instruments and produce the tracks himself. Approximately five hundred copies of this debut self released cd were produced and around twenty of those were sent to music critics and bloggers. In 2008, the cd was released by Jagjaguwar and gained radio airplay with the song “Skinny Love”. The song was also recognized on Apple Itunes as the free single of the week in the United Kingdom.
The debut album would be highly praised by critics and Bon Iver’s growing fan base. Rolling Stone named the album to its list of the Top 50 Albums of 2008 where it landed at number twenty nine. Two songs off the album, “Blindsided” and “Flume” appeared in episodes of One Tree Hill on the CW network. The lead single “Skinny Love” also appeared in episodes of Chuck and Grey’s Anatomy.
In 2009, Bon Iver recorded a song “Rosyln” written for the New Moon soundtrack. The song would help the band reach a new audience of Twilight fans and showed the band’s ability and attempt at changing musical styles. The band collaborated with Kanye West on several songs which appeared on one of the rapper’s albums. “Monster” would feature Bon Iver along with Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, and Rick Ross.
Bon Iver’s second record Bon Iver was released in 2011 featuring ten new songs. The album had a wide range of musical styles including rock, pop, and hints of metal. The band is nominated for four Grammy Awards thanks to its two records. In 2012, fans will find out if Bon Iver wins “Best New Artist”, “Best Alternative Artist”, “Song of the Year”, or “Record of the Year”.
