Death Cab for Cutie
Formed in Bellingham, Washington, Death Cab for Cutie has become one of the most popular indie bands of the 2000s. In 1997, Ben Gibbard founded the band after releasing a solo demo album and then recruiting band members to join him. The band now consists of Gibbard, who plays guitar, piano, and is the lead vocalist, Nick Harmer (Bass) and Jason McGerr (Drums).
The band’s name comes from the title of a song in the movie Magical Mystery Tour. The movie was based on an album by The Beatles. The band released several albums on independent labels before signing a deal in 2004 with major record label Atlantic Records.
In 1998, the album Something About Airplanes was released. Other albums released before the Atlantic Records deal were We have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes (2000), and The Photo Album (2001). In 2003, Transatlantacism helped the band gain popularity and notice from critics and producers alike.
Songs from Transatlantacism appeared on television shows like, “The O.C.”, “Six Fee Under”, “CSI:Miami”, and “Californication”. Movies like Wedding Crashers and Mean Creek also used Death Cab for Cutie songs for the first time.
In 2004, the band released Plans. The album would be the band’s most successful to date and first on a major record label. The album featured singles “Soul Meets Body” and “Crooked Teeth”. Death Cab for Cutie was asked to perform as musical guests on “Saturday Night Live” for the first time and was featured on the show which aired January 14th, 2006. Plans secured a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album. Commercially the album reached gold in its first year and spent an amazing 47 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Top 200. In 2008, Plans was later certified platinum when it passed the million records sales mark.
Narrow Stairs was released in 2008. The lead single “I Will Possess Your Heart” helped the band reach number one for the first time on the Billboard Top 200. The album was once again nominated for a Best Alternative Album Grammy Award and would also gather a nomination for Best Rock Song for “I Will Possess Your Heart”.
In 2009, Death Cab for Cutie was one of the featured artists on the soundtrack to Twilight: New Moon. The band contributed the song, “Meet Me on the Equinox”. Also in that year, Death Cab for Cutie released an EP The Open Door. Even though it was an EP it was also nominated for Best Alternative Album at the Grammy Awards. The release of Codes and Keys came in 2011 and is the most recent release from the band. The lead single “You are a Tourist” once again helped the band retain its success with indie fans and pop fans alike. The band is currently working on material for a new album and has been touring for the past year. Death Cab for Cutie remains a prominent fixture in the indie music scene despite their major record label deal.
