Born as Aubrey Drake Graham, the rapper eventually dropped his first and last name to go by his current name of Drake. Originally known as an actor in his home country of Canada, Drake has gone on to be one of the most successful rappers of the late 2000s. He has collaborated with Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne, Eminem, Andre 3000, Nicki Minaj, and Rihanna.
Drake appeared as the character Jimmy Brooks on popular Canadian high school drama Degrassi: The Next Generation. The character of Jimmy Brooks was featured on the show for 8 seasons and over 130 episodes. Brooks would become paralyzed on the show after an episode dealing with a controversial school shooting. Graham began acting while attending Forest Hill Collegiate Institute in a suburb of Toronto.
Drake released two mixtapes prior to his major record label debut. In 2006, Room for Improvement was released. The album was a free download on Drake’s website and also on his own Myspace profile page. His next mixtape would prove more successful and helped the Canadian land on the BET channel. Drake’s first record Thank Me Later was released in 2010. The album immediately reached number one in the United States and was certified platinum for selling a million copies later that year. Before the album came out three singles were released. All the singles hit the top ten of the United States charts. The success of “Over”, “Find Your Love” and “Miss Me” helped the album sell 447,000 copies in its first week in America.
In 2011, Drake released Take Care, his sophomore album. The album featured the singles “Headlines”, “Make Me Proud” and “The Motto”. The album sold over 600,000 copies in its first week of release and was number one on the Billboard Albums Chart for its first week. Since its release the album has gone platinum in the United States and gold in the United Kingdom.
Drake has been rumored to have dated Rihanna and Nicki Minaj at some point in his musical career. He is currently touring to promote Take Care. Drake recently lent his voice to the movie Ice Age 4: Continental Drift in which he voices the character Ethan. Over his short musical career, Drake has transitioned from Canadian television role player to successful world known rapper.
