Eminem’s rise to fame has been a unique story that was even turned into a feature film called 8 Mile. Born Marshall Mathers III, the rapper has also been known by Slim Shady and is most prominently known by stage name Eminem. Best known as a platinum selling rapper, Eminem is also a record producer, songwriter for other artists, and most recently an actor.
Eminem was born in Missouri but after his father left when he was eighteen months hold was a frequent traveler. Eminem’s mother took her only son from place to place before settling on Warren, Michigan where Eminem would spend his influential teen years. Many of Eminem’s songs refer to periods of his life including when his Dad left, his relationship with his mother, his relationship with ex-wife Kim, and the birth of his daughter Hailie. Licensed to Ill by the Beastie Boys is the first record Eminem said he ever listened that helped lead him into the rap genre. During his high school years he would frequent school parking lots and take part in freestyle battles. He eventually dropped out of high school to pursue a career in music. He caught his lucky break when Jimmy Iovine, CEO of Interscope Records asked for a demo tape after hearing some of Eminem’s music. This demo would lead to the placement with Dr. Dre producing the debut album.
Eminem is best known for his solo recordings but also records as a member of the bands D12 and Bad Meets Evil. He also is a frequent guest collaborator on other artists’ records. His debut solo album The Slim Shady LP helped launched his career and was the first of three consecutive albums that would help him take Best Rap Album of the Year Awards at the Grammies. Two of his records The Eminem Show (2002) and Recovery (2010) were the best selling records in the country their respective years.
