The band Franz Ferdinand was formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 2002. The current lineup of band members is:

-Alex Kapranos (lead vocals, guitar)

-Bob Hardy (bass guitar)

-Nick McCarthy (rhythm guitar, keyboards, backing vocals)

-Paul Thomson (drums, percussion, backing vocals)

The band’s unique name comes from personal history and world history mashed together. One of the band members had a race horse named “The Archduke”. Band mates decided it would be cool to name the group after Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The band was enamored by the alliteration of his name and his significant place in world history. The archduke is credited as being a major factor in the beginning of World War I. The general was assassinated in 1914 by a Bosnian supporter while traveling in a car with his wife.

The band’s debut album came in 2004 with the self-titled Franz Ferdinand. The album reached a peak position of three in the United Kingdom with its debut. The success of the album came with the second released single “Take Me Out”, which would chart in the United Kingdom and gain the band fans in the indie music scene in the United States. “The Dark of the Matinee” and “This Fire” would also chart as top ten singles from the band’s first album. “Take Me Out” was one of the top played songs on many indie music radio stations.

You Could Have it So Much Better, released in 2005 was a successful record in the United States and United Kingdom. The album sold over 500,000 copies in the United States to become certified gold. The album featured the hit single “Do You Want To”. The success of the single also helped the album chart in the United States, reaching the top ten. In the United Kingdom, the album peaked at the top with a position of number one. The album was also certified platinum in the United Kingdom for selling over 600,000 copies.

In 2009, the band released Tonight: Franz Ferdinand as their third studio album. The album debuted at number two in the United Kingdom. In the United States the album once again cracked the top ten with a peak of number nine on the Billboard 200. The singles from the album were “Ulysses” and “No You Girls”.

Franz Ferdinand was one of many bands to play at the Coachella Festival in 2009. The band also toured with Green Day as an opening act on their 2009 tour.

The band put out the single “The Lobster Quadrille” for the Alice in Wonderland Soundtrack, for the remake movie directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp.

Franz Ferdinand is one of a few Scottish bands to be nominated for a Grammy Award. The band has become one of the successful imports from Scotland into the United Sates. Franz Ferdinand remains popular with the indie music scene as fans await their still untitled 2012 album release.
