Gorillaz
Gorillaz are the best selling virtual band of all time. Of course they are in a small music genre but they have completely owned the sub-genre and changed the way it is viewed throughout the world. Formed in 1998, the band is the collaborative effort of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. Albarn serves as the musical director for the band, while Hewlett handles the visual directing. The idea of the group came to the two founders while watching MTV.
The virtual band Gorillaz consists of four unique band members. Lead vocals and keyboards are handled by 2D. Murdoc Niccals plays bass guitar and the drum machine. Guitars, Keyboards, and Backing Vocals are handled by Noodle. Russel Hobbs plays drums and percussion for the group.
The band’s self titled record Gorillaz, released in 2001, would go on to sell seven million copies worldwide. “Clint Eastwood” was the band’s first single and it would appear on this album after being released in 2000. Songs of Gorillaz being featured in the Madden video game in 2002 and Ice Breakers commercials would help the band breakthrough in the United States. The song was featured in episodes of teenager shows like Smallville and Daria.
With the success of Gorillaz, the band released Demon Days in 2005 and it would go on to sell seven million copies in the United States and United Kingdom alone. This record featured the hit single “Feel Good Inc.” The single would hit charts around the world and eventually peaked at number two on the United Kingdom Singles chart. The song was so successful and critically praised it would eventually be featured in Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and SingStar. These three options gave fans around the world the ability to play and sing along with the cartoon band. Demon Days also featured “DARE” which was released as a single. The second single off the sophomore album would debut at number one in the United Kingdom. As of 2011, the album has sold over sixteen million copies around the world.
In 2007, the band was in talks to take its show on the road touring with the four band members appearing as holograms on stage. The band performed at the 2006 Grammy Awards in similar fashion but would eventually call off the tour. Band founders called off the tour due to expenses and the uncertainty of the shows all going off without a hitch.
The band did perform as one of the headliners at 2010’s Coachella Music Festival. The performance to 70,000 fans features hologram images on the stage that appeared realistic using the latest technology. The year 2010 also saw the release of the two newest Gorillaz records: Plastic Beach and The Fall.
Most recently the group put out a compilation album The Singles Collection 2001:2011 which was released in November of 2011. The album features seventeen tracks that are original recordings, radio versions, and remixes of some of Gorillaz best and most famous songs.
