Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefanie Joanne Angelina Germanotta, is a popular American singer, musician and songwriter. She gained her popularity thanks to the creation of original and eccentric music combining disco, electronica, glam rock R&B and resembling the music of Michael Jackson and Madonna. The singer was born on 28 March, 1986 in New York. She was the eldest child in the family. Her parents were an American of Italian origin, Joseph Germanotta, and his spouse Cynthia Bissett. The family where the singer grew up was well provided for; her father, a former musician, since 1999 was a chief executive of a large IT Company “Infocrossing”, subsequently he held the post of vice-president of Verizon Communications Company and was a manager of her daughter’s business. When she was 4, Stefanie learned playing the piano, and during her school years she was composing ballads for open performances at jazz clubs and was engaged in pop music, listened to Michael Jackson, Rolling Stones and The Beatles.
She studied at Manhattan school for girls, “Convent of the Sacred Heart”, where two sisters Hilton also studied. In 2004 Stefanie entered New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. Though she left it in a half of the year to concentrate on her musical career, due to the dates of the university website, she has graduated from its Dramatic Department in 2009. Since 2005 Germanotta would often performed at burlescue performances (entertaining shows, including cabaret, variety shows and striptease) and began to compose music with her own group Stefani Germanotta Band. She also made some money on the side as a waitress and used drugs for awhile. At that time thanks to a musical producer Rob Fusari she has chosen a stage name “Lady Gaga” (according to the song by Queen “Radio Ga Ga”) and decided on her stage image. After the unsuccessful agreement with “Island Def Jam” label, which was broken off shortly after the signing, Fusari led Lady Gaga to Interscope Records, where she used to compose songs for Britney Spears and Pussycat Dolls for the first time. In 2007 she was noticed by a popular rap singer Akon, who together with Fusari convinced the chief of Interscope, Vincent Herbert, to let Germanotta record her first single with RedOne on Interscope Records and Kon Live Distribution, belonging to Akon. So were recorded the first singer’s singles that made her known: "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich", "Just Dance" and "Poker Face". Lady Gaga’s stage debut was at Chicago music festival “Lollapalooza” in the end of 2007. In the words of the singer, radio stations and TV channels refused to play her music and videos for rotating for a long time. But the situation changed due to the favourable attitude from the sexual minorities. The singer confessed that she is bisexual herself. In 2008 Lady Gaga moved to Los Angeles to work on her debut album “The Fame”. It was released in August of the same year alongside with Fusari, RedOne, and Martin Kierszenbaum. In 2008 the song “Just Dance” headed the hit parade Top 100 of Billboard magazine, and the album itself topped the hit parades of Sweden, Australia and Canada. For the first year after the release of the album, they have sold over 2 million copies, what drew the attention to the singer, as the music industry felt the influence of the world economic crisis at that time. Debut album has been holding for 154 weeks in the British hit parade and left it just in 2010. That was recorded in The Guinness Book of Records. In November 2009 the second album was released, “The Fame Monster”. Lady Gaga devoted the song “Speechless” to her father who was seriously ill at that time. In March 2010 Fusari through the court action demanded 30 million dollars from the Singer for the non-execution of the contract. In his point of view, after Lady Gaga has gained the reputation and said goodbye to him, the company Mermaid Music LLC, belonging to the singer, stopped to pay 20 per cents of the earnings. In August 2010, New York Supreme Court rejected the claim by Fusari and cross claim by Lady gaga. In May 2011 the third album “Born This Way” was released. The press discussed Lady Gaga’s musical style that combined dance electronica and some elements from glam rock, and also the theatrical and provocative manner of performances and music videos. Despite the majority of her performances were dancelike, Lady Gaga sometimes played the piano herself during the performances. The press noted that an important role in her image was due to her fanciful stage and casual costumes, the great number of which she produces on her own. In the number of musicians having influenced Lady Gaga are Madonna, Freddy Mercury, Andy Warhol and David Bowie. The press also wrote that Lady Gaga imitated the image and make-up from Christina Aguilera. In 2010 over 35 million copies were sold worldwide. In 2009 she was nominated for Grammy Award for the first time. In 2010 she won two Grammy awards of five: the best album of electro dance style and the beat dance record. In 2010 she became the prize-winner of three Brit Awards: the best foreign debutant, the foreign author of the best song and the album. Also she was awarded five World Music Awards. The magazine “Time” included her in the list of Top 100 the most influential people of the planet. In 2010 the singer won 8 nominations of “MTV Video Music Awards”, among which were Best Video of the Year, Best Pop Video, and Best Female Video. Lady Gaga isn’t married, though there were rumors that she was going to marry rap singer Kanye West. In April 2010 she announced that she was against extramarital relationship and even gave celibacy. Also she refused to sit naked to “Playboy” and other male magazines.
