The founder of heavy metal, one of the greatest bands of the XX century, Led Zeppelin was formed on the bones of the band “The Yardbirds”. In 1967 The Yardbirds recorded their last album “Little Games” and were on the verge of a split. The members of the band Jimmy Page (born on January 9, 1944, Heston, England; guitar) and John Paul Jones (born on July 3, 1946, Sidcup, England; bass, keyboards) became friends when Jones was helping Jimmy in his musical work. At that moment The Yardbirds lost the vocalist and guitarist and Page was at a loss.
He began to look for their replacement and hired Robert Plant (born on August 20, 1948, West Bromwich, England) as a vocalist and John Bonham (born on May 31, 1948, Birmingham, England) as a drummer. A new band under the name “The New Yardbirds” had been performing up to late September, 1968. In October 1968 the band changed its name and became “Led Zeppelin”. They recorded their debut album “Led Zeppelin I” for 30 hours. In that year the band signed to Atlantic Records and in 1969 Led Zeppelin went on tour across the USA. Led Zeppelin gained great popularity both in Europe and in the USA. During the continuous tours of 1969 the musicians recorded “Led Zeppelin II” that became a hit. In the third album “Led Zeppelin III” the sound turned to be deeper and accepted the influence of the English folk. Musicians’ obsession with mythology and folklore has developed in the album “Led Zeppelin IV”, that was released in 1971 and presented the world the most famous hit - a rock ballad “Stairway To Heaven” lasting for eight minutes. The album “House Of The Holy” was also experimental and had traditional folk-rock content with a blend of funk and reggae. In 1973 Led Zeppelin were on a great tour across America. In 1974 they formed their own studio “Swan Song”. The first disc recorded in that studio was “Physical Graffity”. But the tour in support of that record was delayed because of the accident in which Robert Plant and his wife got into. So, all the members of the band managed to gather for recording “Presence” just in 1976. During the tour Plant’s son died and all the concerts were immediately delayed. For some time the future of the band remained obscure as their lead singer was almost for two years in solitude. Nevertheless in the late 1978 Led Zeppelin set about recording a new album on ABBA’s studio in Sweden. In 1979 they released long-expected “In Through The Out Door”. In May 1980 Led Zeppelin performed their farewell tour in Europe. During the preparations for the last tour in the USA 32 years old Bonham was found dead out of his own vomit because of alcoholic intoxication. The other members of the band announced about Led Zeppelin’s split as they couldn’t imagine its existence without Bonham. After the band’s disbanding Plant, Page and Jones began their solo careers. In 1982 Jimmy Page released the compilation of Led Zeppelin’s songs under the name “Coda”. In autumn 1994 Page and Plant recorded “No Quarter” for MTV Unplugged. The result of their work was the album “Walking Into Clarksdale”. In spring 1988 all the members of Led Zeppelin gathered together for the only concert devoted to the twentieth anniversary of the band. In 2007 legendary musicians released a collection of the best songs “Mothership” and performed in London.
