LMFAO

The hip hop duo of LMFAO was founded in Los Angeles in 2006. Consisting of Redfoo and Skyblu, the duo has gone on to be one of the most successful bands of 2011. Redfoo was born Stefan Kendal Gordy in 1975 and is the uncle to band member Skyblu. Skyblu was born Skyler Husten Gordy in 1986. Stefan Gordy was born the son of Berry Gordy, the former founder of the Motown record label.

The group has gone on to create a new genre of hip hop called party rock. The genre has music and lyrics that center around drinking and partying and has become a popular music style at colleges and clubs around the country. LMFAO, originally known as Sexe Dudes, signed with Interscope Records in 2008.

In 2008, the band released Party Rock EP on iTunes. The full album version would come later in 2009. The album sold well and eventually charted, reaching number thirty three on Billboard’s chart in the United States. Party Rock also reached number two on the United States Dance Chart. The album’s first single “I’m in Miami Bitch” reached number 51 on the Hot 100 Chart and would also chart in Canada. The song would later be used as the theme song for the television show Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami, centering around two of the Kardashian sisters.

David Guetta’s “Gettin’ Over You” featured LMFAO and became a top ten single in eleven countries, eventually peaking at number thirty one in the United States. The band would begin to have songs featured in Jersey Shore and other television shows on the MTV network.

The band’s second album Sorry for Party Rocking was released in 2011. The album produced the number one single “Party Rock Anthem”, which has since gone on to be a staple in clubs around the world. The song reached number one in the United States and Canada and also appeared in the top ten in several other countries. Another single, “Sexy and I Know It”, reached number one on iTunes in the United States. The album also saw the single “Champagne Showers” receive radio airplay and produce a music video.

In 2011, the band toured in Asia for the first time, helping to further their world dominance of the party rock genre. The band designed a clothing line known as Party Rock. The band has opened for Kesha in the United States. In 2011, the band was also a live guest and musical performer on the hit television show Dancing with the Stars.

The band that has connections to Motown founder Gordy and also to former Jackson 5 member Jermaine Jackson has truly made a name for themselves and created one of this generation’s most popular music genres. The band won two Grammy Awards in 2011 for Best Rap Record and Best Rap Group. LMFAO can be heard at sporting events, dances, and clubs around the world and likely will be for the time being.
