Mumford & Sons
Named after founding member Marcus Mumford, Mumford & Sons are a folk rock band from the United Kingdom who have enjoyed success in the United States and in their home land. The band is made up of Marcus Mumford (vocals, guitars, drums, mandolins), Ben Lovett (vocals, keyboards, accordion, drums), Country Winston Marshall (vocals, banjo), and Ted Dwane (vocals, string bass, drums, guitar). Each member of the band can play a wide range of instruments, which makes the band’s sound and touring experience unique. The songs have a wide range of vocals and melodies thanks to every band member’s ability to sing and provide a unique perspective and interpretation of the song’s lyrics.
The band chose the name Mumford & Sons due to Mumford’s organizational skills and leadership concerning the band and performances. The adoption of the name was seen as more of a family business name. The band members have all been with the band since 2004 as there have been no lineup changes.
Prior to their worldwide fame, the band released their EP Love Your Ground. The band toured heavily in 2008 and 2009 before their debut album would be released. The band opened for Laura Marling in the United Kingdom in 2009. In 2009, the band signed a record deal with Island Records in the United Kingdom and later signed with Glassnote Records to release their cds in North America.
In 2009, the band released their debut album Sigh No More in the United Kingdom. The album would later be released in the United States in 2010. The album was a number one success in Ireland, Australia, and New Zeeland. Sigh No More also reached the number two position in both the United States and United Kingdom. The singles “Little Lion Man” and “The Cave” were staples of radio in the United Kingdom and United States in 2010 and 2011. The band also enjoyed a large success in Australia where “Little Lion Man” was the number one single for almost an entire year.
“Little Lion Man”, one of the band’s first singles was played live on the Late Show with David Letterman in February of 2010. The band also performed the single “The Cave” at the 2010 Grammy Awards. After the show’s performance, sales of Sigh No More increased by 99% in the United States. The album would sell over one million copies and be certified platinum thanks to the band’s new popularity and new base of fans from these television performances.
The success of the band’s debut album led to two Grammy nominations. Mumford & Sons were nominated for the Best New Artist and Best Rock Song (“Little Lion Man”) awards.
The band currently has no release date for their highly anticipated second album. Mumford & Sons remain content with touring and playing for fans around the world while they piece together the best songs for their follow-up sophomore effort.
