Nightwish
The band Nightwish was founded by the keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen in a small Finish town Kitee. He dreamt to create a band that would play the songs that close in their style to the songs are usually sung sitting by the fire. The problem was that classical opera vocal of the singer Tarja Turunen was too powerful for acoustic accompaniment. Eventually they foun the following solution – substitute acoustic with electro and play power-metal. Nightwish recorded demo version and forwarded it to studios. At the beginning 1997 their bands was expanded by the drummer Jukka Nevalainen. The band signed the contract for two albums with the label Spinefarm Records. The first CD Angels Fall First was released in the same year. Despite all critic reviews Nightwish were friendly accepted at homeland. The band wanted to have a album promo tour but it was hard due to Turunen’s studies. Moreover the drummer Nevalainen and guitarist Emppu Vuorinen were in the army at that moment. But this did not prevent Spinefarm from Nightwish potential evaluation and prolong the contract for one more album.
Each respectful metal-band should have a bass guitar player and in 1998 Nightwish invited Sami Vänskä ( later he was shifted by Marco Hietala). The next CD Oceanborn had only benefit on technical side due to new member. The first single from the album Sacrament of Wilderness was among the best in Finish hit lists. In 1999 Nightwish released album of singles collection Sleeping Sun (Four Ballads To The Eclypse) that was inspired by the future Sun eclyspe in Germany.
Charming Tarja’s vocal in gothic accompaniment struck German audience. Sleeping Sun still is considered to be one of the best songs of the band. Next year Nightwish submitted for participation in Eurovision contest with the track Sleepwalker but did not succeed.
In 2002 they released an album Century Child. It got popular and one of the reasons was that in recording of some songs a symphony orchestra took part. The most popular single was cover version to Phantom Of The Opera. Wishmaster got golden status in Finland in two hours after the release.
In 2005 the band released collection of the best songs High Hopes and later there was a concert record The End Of The Era. It was the last Tarja’s performance with Nightwish since straight after the concert the group mates handed her a letter about her elimination out of Nightwish. In her letter Traja said that it was absolute surprise for her . In 2006 Nightwish started sear of a new vocalist. It was 36-year-old Anette Olzon from Sweden former singer of Alyson Avenue. Though band did not become worse after Tarja’s leave .
In 2009 Nightwish made to their fans great present with the music collection Lokikirja – it had a large number of songs including remaking of debut CD Angels Fall First. This collection presents itself true encyclopedia of Nightwish creative work starting with the earliest works to Dark Passion Play. This collection will make happy any symphony power-metal lover.
