The formation of the American rock band Papa Roach began in Northern California in 1993. Four friends: vocalist Jacoby Shaddix (nicknamed Coby Dick), guitarist Jerry Horton, bassist Will James and drummer Dave Buckner formed the band. The cool name “Papa Roach” comes from the name of Coby Dick’s step-grandfather Howard William Roatch, who was called as “Papa”. So his nickname became the title of the band, and the cockroach was the symbol of the band, standing for the vitality and longevity.
Due to the original blend of hip hop, funk and rap rock the band gained quick popularity in the city. After some years of performance in cafes, pizzerias and parties they began to perform at such famous American places as Cactus Club in San Jose, the Cattle Club in Sacramento and Berkeley Square in Berkeley. Because of charismatic vocalist Coby Dick and hard powerful music, Papa Roach was mostly liked by the young audience. In 1994, the guys released their first seven-tack EP “Potatoes for Christmas”. Ryan Brown temporarily replacedDave Buckner, who had to study art at Seattle. In a year Dave came back and they recorded two-track demo “Caca Bonita”. Later there were other changes in the lineup. Will James left the group to work at the summer church camp and was replaced by 16 years old Tobin Esperance (bass-guitar). By 1997 Papa Roach has already performed at one stage with such bands as Incubus, Powerman 5000, Hed P.E., Snot, Far, Static-X, and released the first full-length CD “Old Friends From Young Years”. By 2000 the band has produced some more EPs: “5 Tracks Deep”, that sold over 1000 copies in a month, and “Let 'Em Know”, that became the best independent release of the band. Thanks to the success of “Let 'Em Know”, the band caught the attention of some labels, among which was Warner Bros. It heloed the band to record one more EP that included demos “Infest”, “Last Resort”, “Broken Home”, “Dead Cell” and “She Loves Me Not”. But Warner Bros. didn’t want to sign Papa Roach. However DreamWorks Records connected with the band and, having contracted them, released the album “Infest” on April 25, 2000. The album became the real legend of nu-metal. The band immediately became popular. It was broadcasted by radio and TV. The album went platinum for three times. In 2001 the band decided to have a break to write on the second album “LoveHateTragedy” that originally titled “Born to Rock”. It was released on June 18, 2002. Though it sold fewer copies than “Infest”, it went gold and was # 2 in Billboard 200. New album “Getting Away With Murder” presented music lovers such hits as “Getting Away With Murder” and “Scars”. After that release the band began touring America and greater part of Europe with Slipknot, Dead Poetic, Trust Company, Chronic Future, Skindred, 311 and Unwritten Law. The concert DVD “Live And Murderous In Chicago” was released in 2005. The title of the fourth album “The Paramour Sessions” originated from the title of the mansion, where it was recorded. The sounding of the album differed from the first one. The guys went deep into alternative rock. Dave Buckner was announced temporarily leaving the band because of family circumstances. But later, Jacoby Shaddix told that Dave cured of alcohol. Tony Palermo, drummer from Unwritten Law replaced him while touring. In the end of February 2008 Papa Roach started working on a new album. By that time Tony became permanent drummer of the band. The original title of the band was “Days of War, Nights of Love”, but later it was changed into “Metamorphosis”.
