An outstanding English rock band Pink Floyd was the pioneer of progressive and psychedelic rock. The band is also famous for its deep philosophical lyrics and numerous experiments and search of a new sound. The group for that time had everything unusual – even cover albums, apart from rich concerts. To introduce the popularity of Pink Floyd in a global sense, it would be enough to report that the band has sold over 300 million copies worldwide.
The story about this band began at one of Cambridge schools, where friends Syd Barrett(born on January 6, 1946; guitar, vocals), Roger Waters (born on September 9, 1944; bass, vocals) and David Gilmour (born on March 6, 1944; guitar, vocals) studied. Having finished the school, Syd and David entered London Art School, and Waters entered “Regent Street Polytechnic”. There Waters formed his first band “Sigma 6” with Nick Mason (born on January 27, 1945; drums) and Richard Wright (born on July 28, 1945; keyboards). The original lineup also included bass player Clive Metcalfe and vocalist Juliet Gale (for a short time). But soon Metcalfe was replaced by lead guitarist Bob Klose, and waters changed for bass. The band has changed several names: “T-Set”, “The Meggadeaths”, “The Abdabs”. Roger invited Barrett to join them, but he couldn’t agree with Klose on music, and in the late 1965 Abdabs has split up. Barrett, Waters, Mason and Wright renewed their work under the title “Pink Floyd Sound” (the name derived from the names of two blues musicians Pink Anderson and Floyd Council). Soon they abridged the title and became just “Pink Floyd”. The inspirers and the main authors of the first debut album “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn” were Barrett and Waters, whose fantastic lyrics successfully went with “psychedelic planetary mysticism” of Barrett’s musical inventions. The album has become bestseller in a flash, as far as it was quite a new word in rock music: mysterious “space” sound with a lot of effects and forcing the tense by “crying” guitar solo. The author of the most songs of that record Syd Barrett used LSD at that time. With the time drugs addiction has grown, and he had to depart from the band, proposing his friend Gilmour as his replacement. The second album “A Saucerful Of Secrets” occurred to be more perfect. Being written almost wholly by waters, it comprised splendid, originally arranged compositions. Since then, the stylish sound of the band began its formation. Eventual establishment of Pink Floyd as a mega band with unquestionable international authority was in 1970-1971 when the albums “Atom Heart Mother” and “Meddle” werereleased. Since 1973 the discography of the band began to grow with such masterpieces as “Dark Side Of The Moon”, “Wish You Were Here”, “Animals” and “The Wall”. After the triumphal release of “The Wall”, the crisis in the band’s creativity came. The result of this was the internal struggles about the author rights of the compositions. The fact was that Wright and Gilmour worked at their solo careers at that time, and at the gigs they tried to use the songs, written with Waters for Pink Floyd. It finished when Wright quitted the band and was replaced by the band’s producer Bob Ezrin. The crisis has also affected the compositions: the album “The Final Cut” released after “The Wall” was definitely poor. The frontman of the band Roger Waters made haste to announce about the band’s split up, and began working at his solo project. Meanwhile, Gilmour and Mason decided to revive the lineup without Waters. Having known this, Wright returned to the band and with the assistance of bass player Tony Levin, the renewed Pink Floyd released a new record “A Momentary Lapse Of Reason”. In 1994 the album “The Division Bell saw the light”. After that Pink Floyd went on global tour, the result of which was the release of live“Pulse”.
