System of a Down
System of a Down was formed in 1994 in California. The rock band consists of four founding members, all of Armenian descent. Lead vocalist Serj Tankian also plays some guitar and keyboards on certain tracks but primarily just handles singing. Daron Malakian plays guitar and handles backing vocals to Tankian. Shavo Odadjian plays bass guitar and sometimes sings. John Dolmyan plays drums for the groups. All members of the band have been with the group since its founding other than Dolmyan, who joined the group prior to any studio released albums. The Armenian influence can be heard in many of the songs as they deal with America’s War on Terrorism and the band sings about America’s presence in other countries.
The band has released five studio albums throughout their seventeen year musical career.
-System of a Down (1998)
-Toxicity (2001)
-Steal this Album (2002)
-Mezmerize (2005)
-Hypnotize (2005)
The band’s debut self-titled record featured two singles “Spiders” and “Sugar” that would receive frequent radio airplay on rock stations around the United States. Music videos shot for both songs were also featured in rotation on MTV. The band toured opening for large acts like Metallica, Slayer and Incubus.
Toxicity was released as the band’s sophomore album in 2001 and would be the band’s most successful record of all time. The record immediately hit number one on United States and Canada’s record charts. The album has sold twelve million copies since its release around the world. Three singles, “Toxicity”, “Chop Suey”, and “Aerials” would lead the album in radio airplay and video rotation. The album went on to receive Grammy nominations for the band.
Steal this Album was a studio album that consisted unreleased material from the band’s sophomore album. Tracks were leaked on the internet and the band eventually pieced them together to make the record using the name of the album as a slight joke at their own fans. A couple of singles were released from the album but did not receive the exposure that tracks off of the previous two albums did.
The next two albums Hypnotize and Memerize featured more songwriting and singing from Malakian than on previous records. Both albums again helped System of a Down reach number one status on the United States charts as well as several other countries.
System of a Down went on a three year long hiatus beginning in 2006. Tankian would complete a solo project and other members of the group would join or form their own side project bands. The hiatus was announced as a break and the band did reunite in 2010. Since their reunion, System of a Down has played at several large festivals in Europe and are starting to tour North America once again. They remain one of the best selling rock bands on the 2000s. Fans eagerly await the release of a sixth studio album which band members have said they will take their time with and have no current timetable set on a release date or even year.
