The xx
In 2005, four members off Elliot School in London formed the indie pop band The xx. The band would remain as four until the departure of founding member Baria Qureshi in 2009. The other founding members are Romy Madley-Croft, Oliver Sim, and Jamie Smith.
The band’s debut album xx received critical praise and was among the albums featured on Rolling Stone’s annual Best of the Year List at #9. Under the record label Young Turks, the album was released and let to a headlining tour in 2009. The band recorded the songs for xx in a garage and produced the songs themselves. “Crystalised” became a Single of the Week on Apples Itunes for free download in the United Kingdom. Four music videos would be released for songs featured on xx.
Singles from the debut album enjoyed success in television and movies. The first episode of HBO’s annual 24/7 Road to the Winter Classic featured the track “Intro”. Other songs appeared in episodes of Persons of Interest, Cold Case, Suits, Lie to Me, Grey’s Anatomy, 90210, and The Vampire Diaries.
With the band having songs featured on television and having a headlining show the album sold well and charted in the United Kingdom and United States. The album peaked at #3 in the United Kingdom where the album was certified platinum, after it sold 1 million copies. In the United States the album cracked into the top 100 with a peak position of #92. The album was certified gold, for selling 500,000 copies, in France as well. The single “Islands” reached #34 on the singles chart in the band’s native United Kingdom. The video for “Islands” was well received by critics and fans alike as well.
In 2010, the band played at festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza. The same year the band took home the Mercury Prize. The Mercury Prize is awarded to the best British and Irish album in a given year. After the awards ceremony the album jumped to #3 in the United Kingdom and enjoyed a sales increase of over 200%. In 2011, the band also enjoyed being nominated for several BRIT Awards including: Best British Album, Best British Breakthrough, and Best British Band.
The band’s second album is scheduled for a 2012 release. The band is currently working on the album and members have stated it will have more of a club feel to it and its songs. The highly anticipated album will be the first the band has recorded with three members as Qureshi was present on the debut album xx.
Now touring as a trio, The xx has enjoyed success in the United Kingdom and the United States. With only one album released the band has enjoyed maximum results from minimal output. The band’s sophomore album is likely to chart and generate more buzz. The different style of music on the album could help or hurt sales depending on how critics and the band’s fans accept it.
